Don Earl Evans
Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend
Born into a life of adversity, Don moved with his parents and siblings from Mississippi to Milwaukee for better education and employment opportunities. He worked hard as a young boy and teenager to help his parents. He enlisted in the Vietnam War in hopes of being able to choose a career and he was assigned as a weapons specialist.
Don was a good provider for his family and was generous to others in need with his money and his time. This sense of duty and strong work ethic was maintained throughout his life, whether working on the manufacturing line or as public safety officer for MSOE.
Don was strict, but fair. He had high expectations of his daughters, others, and even himself. He had a direct communication style . He was honest and he always needed to “say his peace” whether he agreed with you or not. However, he let others “say their peace” even if he did not agree.
He was kind, forgiving of others, and he never held grudges.
He was also known as a “Lawn Boss”, or as his wife and daughters joked, the “Lawn Father”. He cared for his yard, especially his grass, which he nurtured like a precious child in need of love and attention. There was no garden that he could not tame and his tomatoes were prolific because he expected it and worked at it.
Don dearly loved his grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and godchildren. He shared his wisdom and advice. Whether it was wanted or not initially, it was appreciated and cherished in time. He was a squeezer of melons and joked it was to determine if your brain was ripe – that is, to determine the amount of brains and common sense.
We will all miss him, as we remember his presence and influence in our lives. He will always be a part of us forever.

I first met officer Don Evans when I was a student at MSOE in the early 90’s. He was a public safety officer on campus. Officer Evans got to know many of the students on campus that he protected—including me. He took the time to get to know me and was interested in how my studies were going. We had many memorable conversations about life, work, and family. I later got to know his daughter Donna and through her I could see how much officer Evans valued his family. Officer Evans was well respected by those he served and protected and lived with high integrity, which I saw from the love and respect his daughter Donna had for him. Officer Don Evans will be missed. I am truly honored and blessed to have known him. My prayers and condolences go out to the Evans family.
