Rog Martin passed away peacefully at Clement J. Zablocki Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center on December 14th, 2023, at the age of 84. He is preceded in death by his wife and best friend Judi (Steffan) Martin of 62 years. He is also preceded in death by his parents Lester and Annette (Dolly) Martin, sister Vicki and brother Craig Martin. Loving Father to Kathie (Tony) Broecker, Scott (Paddy) Martin. Cherished Grandfather to Alysia (Jimmy) Berg/Glyzewski, Evan and Sammy Sue Martin. Dear great- grandpa to Bella Boo. He is survived by his sister Pam (Ira) Smerling, sister-in-law Janis (Dale) Broer, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, along with numerous close and special friends.
He loved hunting, fishing, putzing in his garden and pole barn. He loved playing cards (Sheepsheads) and pool with the guys at Headwaters and Skip-Bo with family at home. He deer hunted in Blair, WI for nearly 60 years with his family and friends and took yearly fishing trips to Lake Erie. He had the best stories, ask anyone! He was on the bowling league and made the 600 club back in the day. Rog was very active at our church and school (Our Lady of Good Hope) growing up. He was our softball and soccer coach, volunteered at school festivals and Friday Fish Frys, along with being on several committees.
Rog owned and ran his own business; an ice cream sandwich shoppe called Treats for nearly 5 years. He worked at Rexnord/Norberg as a skilled welder for over 35 years, where he was able to take early retirement to move Up North to Boulder Junction, WI. His dream come true and where his grandchildren and great-grandchild would have many cherished memories with him.
Rog served in the US Army, Korea War from 1957 to his honorable discharge in 1963. From March to May 1957, he was trained as a Teletype Operator. This did not last long, as I am sure it was discovered that he was not the best speller. He had several assignments in the states before he was transferred to South Korea.
Rog was a family man, hard worker, generous, outgoing, and made friends wherever her went. He loved his family, friends and telling stories, whether they were true or not.
We want to thank everyone at Clement J. Zablocki on the 6th and 9th floors for the wonderful, compassionate, understanding, and loving care that they provided to Rog and his family.
Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa and storyteller, we will miss you so much! You are back with your Queen now. We love you and miss you both so much.
