Gregory “Gregg” Dexter Sargent—walking encyclopedia, elite prankster, amateur ornithologist, raconteur, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend—died peacefully at home on March 18, 2024, surrounded by laughter and people who loved him very much. Born on May 14, 1952, in Gloucester, Massachusetts to the late Raymond Dexter Sargent and the late Margaret F. Parsons (Thompson), Gregg graduated from Gloucester High School in 1970. After attending North Shore Community College in Beverly, MA, he transferred to McGill University in Montreal, Canada and later completed his master’s at Antioch College in Keene, NH. Gregg worked as a psychotherapist for Aurora Health Care out of Mount Sinai in Milwaukee, WI and later out of Aurora Behavioral Health in Wauwatosa, WI, dedicating himself to helping others navigate life’s complexities with compassion and understanding.

Gregg was loved by a colorful cast of characters, including his daughter Meaghan Sargent of Milwaukee, WI; his late wife Kathryn McGrane-Sargent of Milwaukee, WI; his nephew Silvester “Sly” McGrane of Houston, TX; two brothers: David Sargent and his wife Gina of Gloucester, MA and Dana Sargent and his wife Grace of Gloucester, MA; and three sisters: the late Patricia Sargent Burleson and her husband Harry of Gloucester, MA, Julie Thompson and her husband Michael of Essex, MA, and Rebecca Chapman of Farmington, CT—along with many other nieces and nephews; the Murray clan; and his loyal dog, Charlie.

Gregg’s family was the cornerstone of his world. He shared an indescribable bond with his wife Kate, whom he met at McGill University. Together, they shared 39 years of adventures, a testament to the power of friendship, laughter, and unconditional love. Meaghan, his daughter, is the apple that fell close to the tree—a reflection of Gregg’s values, his sense of humor, his green thumb, and the profound impact of his guidance.

Gregg found joy in the slow lane, occupying his time with simple pleasures like tending to his garden, home-cooking every meal, biking to work, perusing the local library, “hunting” with his buddy Scott, sailing with his buddy Dan, practicing tai chi, and sharing good conversation with good company. His insatiable curiosity knew no bounds, propelling him into the depths of many esoteric subjects that left others scratching their heads in wonder. From bird migration patterns to the most arcane historical events, Gregg’s knowledge spanned the spectrum of human curiosity. Known for his enthusiastic storytelling, kind smile, and unwavering compassion, Gregg leaves behind a trail of deep belly laughs, a few raised eyebrows, and, of course, snacks.
Although Gregg no longer walks beside us, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. In honoring Gregg’s memory, may we celebrate the indelible mark he left on our lives—the laughter, the love, and the mischievous twinkle in his eye—and strive to embody the same warmth and humor that defined his life.
