Dr. Sidney “Sid” Edward Johnson of Wauwatosa, WI, and previously a longtime resident of Marshfield, WI, passed away on July 17, 2026 at age 90. Our loving, kind, and thoughtful son, brother, brother-in-law, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, will be dearly missed.

Sidney was born on February 27, 1936, in Iron Mountain, MI, the son of Eddie and Frances (Engstrom) Johnson. He spent his early life living in the northwoods town of Fern, WI, where, as a young boy, he loved spending time fishing in, and exploring the wilds of, Woods Creek near his home. He spent the latter part of his youth living with his family in Dunbar, WI. Sidney graduated from Pembine High School and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Sidney continued his studies in Madison, graduating with his medical degree from the university in 1961. After completing medical residencies in Buffalo, NY, and Minneapolis, MN, Sidney and his wife, Gloria, settled in Marshfield in 1966 after he joined the staff of the Marshfield Clinic (then located at the corner of Central Ave. and 7th St.) as a gastroenterologist. Sidney worked at the Clinic for over four decades, serving at times as the Clinic’s president and medical director. Sidney loved his work and helping those with medical needs. Sidney and Gloria moved to St. Camillus Assisted Living in Wauwatosa in 2021 to be closer to family, and they subsequently moved to St. Camillus Memory Care and then Skilled Nursing.

Sidney had a lifelong love of the great outdoors, and he especially enjoyed going on many adventures with Gloria, his daughters Pam, Lisa, Tanya, and Kara, and his son, Ethan. These adventures included road trips in the big, blue 1970s Pontiac station wagon (complete with CB radio), camping (in a Coleman tent big enough for a family of seven), fishing (not sure we ever caught that elusive musky) and both downhill and cross-country skiing. When his children were growing up, Sidney always made a pancake brunch for the family every Sunday–in the fall and winter, this meal typically coincided with the start of a televised Packers game. Sidney enjoyed learning about the world around him, and he encouraged his children to maintain a love of learning. Sidney was especially fond of geology and the ancient Dunbar Gneiss that could be found near his childhood home. Sidney loved when family and friends visited, and more often than not, any visitor to his home would be treated to an enthusiastic lecture about what he had recently learned.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 64 years, Gloria (Wahlstrom); daughter Kara Andersen (Aaron); sister Lorraine Erickson; sisters-in-law Sonya Johnson and Carol Tokely; brothers-in-law Russell Brown, James Erickson, Frank Oczus, and Leonard Wahlstrom.

Sidney is survived by his children Pam Christoffel, Lisa Erickson (Richard), Tanya Larsen, and Ethan Johnson (Maura); his son-in-law Aaron Andersen; his grandchildren Thomas Christoffel, Ethan Larsen, Alyssa Larsen, Tara Erickson, Seth Larsen, Genevieve Andersen, Vivienne Andersen, Eamon Johnson, and Olin Andersen; his great-granddaughter Isla Larsen; his great-grandson Gunnar Larsen; his brother Norman Johnson; his sister Ruth Ann Oczus; his sisters-in-law Marlene Wahlstrom and Dawn Wahlstrom (Bob Bock); his brothers-in-law Larry Wahlstrom (Mary Gail), Charlie Gavin (Pat), and Chet Tokely; and many nieces and nephews.

Sidney’s family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to all the staff of St. Camillus and Froedtert Hospital for providing loving and attentive care of Sidney, and for being the ‘family you find along the way.’

At Sidney’s request, he is being cremated. A private memorial, burial, and committal service will take place at Homestead-Aurora Cemetery in Aurora, WI, in August 2026.
