DR. LAWRENCE EVERETT CURRIE

August 18, 1945 – September 16, 2026

Dr. Lawrence Everett Currie, 81, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died peacefully in his sleep on
September 16, 2026. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Clarence Clifton Currie and Violante Currie,
Lawrence grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

Despite significant visual impairment, Lawrence pursued an education and career devoted to
understanding and helping others. He attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for his
undergraduate education, earned a master’s degree at the University of Iowa, and went on to
earn his Ph.D. at Syracuse University.

Lawrence was a clinical psychologist whose career included work with the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs, occupational therapy work with Goodwill, and his own private practice. In
private practice, he worked almost exclusively with Black veterans. His professional life reflected
a longstanding commitment to psychological health and to understanding the particular
experiences of Black veterans.

Among the objects Lawrence kept from his professional life was a 1992 American Psychological
Association Centennial Medal depicting Psyche, the Greek personification of the soul, described
in its accompanying text as representing “the essential and imperishable quality of the human
being.” It was in this spirit that Lawrence approached both his work and his lifelong commitment
to service to humanity. He placed great value on the loyal, long-term relationships he built and
maintained throughout his life.

Lawrence is survived by his son, Jamál Currie; Jamál’s partner, Zoë Darling; and their son,
Grayson Darling. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Laverne Currie, and Laverne’s wife, Dr.
Evelyn Currie, and their children, Christopher Currie, Jacqueline Currie, Michael Currie, and
Nicole Currie; his granddaughter, Kahli Fernandez, and her children, Gabrielle, Gabriella, Elena,
and Allura; his grandson, Jordan Harvell, and Jordan’s wife, Kendra; his surviving Chicago first
cousins, Darshel Robertson and Diane Robertson; and East Coast family members Gail Brown,
Christopher Robertson, and Alma Texeira. He was preceded in death by his daughter,
Táhirih Currie; his brother, Clarence Currie; his sister, Dr. Violante Currie; and Geralyn
Anderson, his sweetie and the love of his life.

In the final years of his life, Lawrence and Jamál spent a great deal of time together, sharing
companionship, conversation, and the simple pleasure of being together. Jamál remains deeply
grateful for that time.

Lawrence made arrangements for his cremated remains to be interred at Wisconsin Memorial
Park alongside Geralyn. A small service for family and friends will be held at a date to be
announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Association for Black
Veterans (NABVETS).
