Passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2018, age 85. She fought a
tough and courageous three month battle with ovarian cancer, but
eventually it proved to be too much. At the end she was able to pass
away at home, in her living room, listening to music and holding her
daughter’s hand.
Loving mother of Denise. Blessed friend of Dale (Chris)
Grohall and their children. Dear companion of ten years, of
Harry the Cat, who used to like to play with her toes in the morning as
she hung her feet out of bed. She is preceded in death by her husband
John of Argonne, Wsconsin and her siblings Jim, Dick, Barbara and Joyce.
Phyllis grew up in Milwaukee on 10th and Center attending North Division
High School. In her twenties she found work as a popular singer in
Milwaukee nightclubs. She gave up a promising entertainment career to
marry and start a family. She was singing at home, active taking walks
and shopping right up to the time of her cancer diagnosis in February 2018.
To everyone at the Reiman Cancer Center in Franklin, especially the
chemo nurses who tried to alleviate her discomfort, a heartfelt thank
you and to dear Hope who brightened what had started as a miserable day
with a gift of beautiful flowers. She loved all of of you. To Dr.
Tampa and the staff on the 4th floor of the Wheaton Hospital in Franklin
during her most recent and last stay, thank you for your compassion and
care in helping both of us deal with this. And to dear Lena who she loved.
To the staff from Ascencion Home Hospice who did everything possible to
keep her comfortable in her home over the last five days of her life.
But especially to the Hospice “on call” night RN Michelle, who came to our home
the night before she passed. Your compassion, patience and care
for not only Phyllis, but myself were a comfort beyond words at a time
when it appeared the end was close. You kindly took the time to explain
simply, at a time of stress, what was happening at this stage and what
to expect and what I could do to make her comfortable. Without your
help that night I would’ve been lost, not sure of what was happening or
what I could do. Your reassuring and inspirational words gave me
strength to carry on and complete this journey, caring for Phyllis, as I
had been, until the end.
And finally to Nurse Next Door, for their care and compassion and Bobbi
who connected us with Menyatta. Phyllis fell in love with her
immediately as did I and Menyatta returned that same love to us. She
promised to be with Phyllis at the end and she was.
Bless you all for your dedication and compassion to those of us in need
at times like this. Phyllis is definitely resting in peace now, but
hopefully in time she’ll be dancing and singing again!
Phyllis did not want a formal service. Just think of her when you hear
the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, a song she loved to sing.
Interment at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
