Martha Arteaga went home to heaven, on May 13, 2021, age 81. She battled dementia and end stage kidney disease with courage. Martha was born to Arturo and Elvira Rodarte on January 19, 1940, in the city of Torreon (Mexico). Preceded in death by her parents and her beloved, eldest daughter, Martha Casillas. Beloved mother of, George Gonzalez, Elva Castaneda, Ralph Gonzalez (Crystal), Alex Ratayczak (John), Dahlia Arteaga-Espinoza (Miguel), Angelica Sanchez (Arlando), and Gabriel Arteaga and her son-in-law, Lupe Casillas. Caring grandmother of Abran, Behlen, Marcos, Damien, Justin, Chelsey, Brandon, Adreanna, Daniel, Annabell, Cesar, Angel, Olias, Elijah, Alexis, Joshua, Julia, Jenna, Madeline, Alandra, Alonzo, Isabella, and Jasmine. Dear sister of Elvira Rodarte and Alejandra Gonzalez. Further loved by great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Martha was a woman full of strength, conviction, and kindness. Her greatest happiness came from being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Always a gracious host, she opened her home to any family member needing someone to talk to or needing a warm, homemade meal. Great at cooking, Martha only made things from scratch. She made tamales for the family on Christmas and their favorite meals on birthdays. Martha was attentive to the needs of others and loved them unconditionally. Her faith in God was genuine and pure. She always said a prayer for those she loved and trusted God in life’s valleys, dealing with life with playful humor. Martha always matched her purse and shoes to her clothing. Her skin was flawless and hardly a wrinkle could be found. She enjoyed watching Spanish soap operas or cooking shows with her daughters and listening to old hymns or Spanish classics from the greats like Juan Gabriel. Going out to eat with her kids or shopping were her favorite past times. She often indulged in the sweeter things in life like pecan rolls, chocolate, or ice cream. Martha worked hard her entire life, both at work and at home and never tired of doing her best. Martha had a green thumb when it came to house plants, which would grow endlessly and multiply with her care. Not only did her plants flourish, but so did those around her, as she accepted them for who they were. Martha will be missed tremendously by her family and friends. She loved with her whole heart and thus, her loss will be felt by those she touched.

My beloved grandmother lived with my family and I for many years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I remember multiple times after school (both in high school and college) and where I would come home and sit in her bed and she would ask me about my day and then I’d get to hear stories from her childhood. I am so thankful for those years of closeness with her. Every night before bed she would always tell me “Te amo, te quiero, te adoro.” I cherish those words with me now
