Biography-(from lovely sisters Jane and Jackie)

Alison Jill Durrant was born on 6th October 1960 to Roy and Betty Durrant. She was their third daughter and younger sister to Jackie and Jane. Her passion for design and art was evident from a young age. I remember her spending hours and hours in our dad’s garage carving dolls furniture for her dolls house then upholstering the dining table chairs in red velvet — she was probably about 8 years old. She was always pestering dad to take her to the local wood merchants to buy off cuts of balsa wood for her ever more intricate designs.

She loved making things and this passion soon transferred into making her own clothes and then on to art school in London. Towards the end of her first year their was an opportunity to study at Syracuse University for a few months.  It was here that she met Rande – and the rest is history! She wanted to continue her studies in the UK so a long distance relationship ensued. To both their credits they made it work in an era without instant messaging, WhatsApp and Instagram. Eventually once she had gained her degree she emigrated to the US at only 23 years old and she and Rande were married.

Mum and Dad were able to visit her and she would come home whenever possible. More recently Jack and I have been able to spend more time with Ali and Rande now that our own families have grown up. She will always be the beloved aunty to Nick, Amy, Jo, Steph and Sam.

Ali is our baby sister and she will always be remembered by all the family and we will miss her every day.

Life-(from Rande)

Ali Durrant celebrated her birth one day and seven years after her spouse, Rande Barke.  They were married in New York City, City Hall, 1983.  The witness, Joanne Howard, wife of film director Johnathan Demme was present.  Ali is the daughter of Roy Durrant and Mary Carter of Chesham Bucks England.  Ali has two beautiful sisters, Jane and Jacqueline, the three of them together a comedy team with their high pitched English accents.

Alison completed a Bachelor of Arts three year course at North East London University with an Honors Degree and a three Semester studio art course at Syracuse University chosen amongst a group of thirty students from North East London University to represent the school in the US.

Ali was a delightful individual, absolutely adored by everyone she met.  Effervescent.  She was incredibly kind-she loved being a friend to those around her.  Ali adored animals in particular her and Rande’s lovely Border Collie Betsy, her cat Bunny and the dapper Dachshund “Lester.”

Alison and Rande met At Syracuse University in 1981.  We became instant best friends, and married in 1983 in New York City.  No words can can describe the kind of bond we had.

Every life she touched will miss this wonderful soul.

A memorial will take place at a later date.
